How to Sidestep Ingrown Toenails (And What to Do If You Can’t!)

An ingrown toenail is a common foot problem, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. While it might start as a minor annoyance, neglect can quickly lead to painful irritation (or even infection!). At Fulshear Foot & Ankle, we want to help you understand this condition, address its symptoms, or prevent it altogether.

Spotting the Signs & Knowing the Cause

Simply put, an ingrown toenail occurs when your nail grows into the skin, rather than straight out. This “ingrowth” pierces the skin, leading to inflammation, pain, and an open pathway for bacteria. But why do they happen?

It depends! Several factors can encourage your toenail to grow incorrectly, including:

  1. Improper Nail Trimming: This is a major cause! Cutting toenails too short, especially rounding the corners, can lead to the nail growing into the skin.
  2. Tight or Ill-Fitting Shoes: Shoes that crowd toes or put excessive pressure on the front of the foot (like high heels or narrow shoes) can force the nail into the skin.
  3. Heredity: Some people’s natural nail shape (e.g., overly curved) makes them more prone to ingrown nails.
  4. Toe Trauma: Stubbing your toe, dropping something on it, or repetitive trauma from activities like running can damage the nail.
  5. Poor Foot Hygiene: Sweaty feet and unclean conditions can create an environment where infections are more likely if an ingrown nail occurs.

Neglecting an Ingrown Toenail is Risky

“Waiting it out” is rarely a good strategy. Untreated, especially if infection sets in, complications can arise, including:

  • Worsening Pain & Infection: Watch for increased pain, redness, swelling, warmth in the area, and pus or drainage. Sometimes a foul odor accompanies infection. In rare, untreated cases, infection can spread to the underlying bone!
  • Abscess Formation: A collection of pus may form, requiring drainage.
  • Crucial Note for Diabetics: If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or nerve damage, any foot injury, including an ingrown toenail, needs immediate professional attention due to the high risk of severe complications.

Smart Steps & Seeking Help

Proper nail trimming (straight across!) and wearing well-fitting shoes are key preventative measures. If you suspect an ingrown toenail, especially with pain, redness, or swelling, don’t attempt “bathroom surgery!”
